Jack Reacher wakes up in the cell in Reacher Season 4 episode 2. He finds out that his hands and legs are tied up. He sees Tamara Green and Jacob. Tamara welcomes Reacher to the party. He asks her how long was he out? She doesn’t know. She says he was here when they woke up a couple hours ago. He says they shot him with a tranquilizer dart. Twice. He asks her how did they take her?

Reacher Season 4 Episode 2

Jacob points at the camera. He reminds Reacher that Big Brother’s watching. Probably listening as well. Reacher tells Tamara and Jacob that they already know how they got here. So no harm in telling him. She says she got home, soon as she put her gun in her safe. Someone must have been hiding in her house. Smelled some chloroform. Here she is.

Jacob says he was walking to the bus stop near his house to meet up with Reacher in New York, felt a sting in his chest, looked down and there was a dart. Next thing he knows, he’s looking at leaves on trees Then he wakes up here.

Reacher doesn’t understand why he’s the only one who’s tied down. Tamara says she and Jacob didn’t see those guys. She asks Reacher if he knows who grabbed them. Maybe the guys who took a run at Reacher yesterday? He says CIA. She asks him if they told him that. He says didn’t need to. They didn’t Mirandize them, cite the Patriot Act or gin up any charges. Means they don’t have the power to arrest. But they had no problem drugging, kidnapping and locking them up in what he can only imagine is a basement, considering the smell and lack of natural light. What federal agency best fits that description?

Jacob says he thought the CIA wasn’t supposed to operate on U.S. soil. Tamara says this is crazy. Because abducting some drifter is one thing. No offense. But snatching up cops? Jacob says so what does it all mean? she says it means that they’re over.

CIA shows up. They open the door of the cell. The doctor holds a shot. He tells Reacher that it’s a stimulant to clear his head. Reacher says it’s clear. The doctor says he just does what they tell him. Reacher asks the doctor they tell him to get that needle jammed in his eye? Because that’s what’s gonna happen, he tries to stick him with that.

The CIA agent discovers that Reacher is plenty awake. He asks the doctor to forget the shot. The doctor leaves the cell. Reacher asks the CIA agent about his neck. CIA Agent asks Reacher about his head instead. He hears that tranq hangovers can be terrible.

Reacher sees the handcuffs. He tells CIA Agent that good luck trying to get those on him. CIA Agent says they’re going on. Question is are they going on the easy way or the bad way? Another agent puts a gun on Reacher’s neck. CIA Agent tells Reacher that they upped the dose. So, he wants to be a hard man or he wants to get this over with.

Reacher gives in for the first time after he was threatened by a gun. He lies in the bed. He acts like a good boy. He lets the agent get the handcuffs on him.

Reacher is taken to a interrogation room. CIA Agent is waiting for Reacher. He checks his passport, and he returns it to him. He thinks Jack is a nickname. Reacher asks CIA Agent to tell him his names. So they can compare. CIA Agent is silent. Reacher tells CIA Agents that they’re Wynken, Blynken and Nod. Wynken knows it’s from the Dutch lullaby.

Reacher calls them that because they put him to sleep? Reacher tells Wynken that he calls them that because, before he leaves this room, he’s gonna put all of them to sleep. Wynken returns the drive to Reacher. He says their techs combed through the data, and the only thing that’s on there is some student’s mediocre sketches. He asks him why. Reacher guesses the guy doesn’t apply himself.

Wynken asks Reacher why does he have his jump drive? Reacher says he needed it. Wynken thinks Reacher needed it to make a copy of the drive he got from Anna Merrick before she killed herself on the train. He asks him where is that thumb drive? Reacher says he has no idea what Wynken is talking about. But Wynken mentions Reacher is the only one that came into contact with Anna, and the drive wasn’t on her person.

He asks him does he think they’re stupid? Reacher says yes. Wynken asks Reacher who was the woman in the park? The one that he let open the drive and look at the contents? Where is she? Reacher guesses Wynken spent most of his resources on him. Because he thought he’d be the problem and she’d be easy. Then, after he was drugged, he went back for her but she was gone. Gave one of his junior officers the slip. Blynken was the one who was supposed to be looking after her.

He looks like the kind of person who would get caught with his pants down. Blynken is provoked. He wants to kick Reacher. Reacher lets Blynken try it. Wynken tells Blynken that not now. He gets it that Reacher can fight. They read his jacket. But what about his friends out there? Reacher says the two aren’t his friends. He just met them today.

Wynken thinks Reacher and Officer Merrick were running around with the drive and they saw him conversing with Detective Green before they detained him. Now, they can only assume that they’re coconspirators. They wanted to talk to him first because they thought he might want to play ball and spare them some pain, but apparently he doesn’t care for them at all.

Wynken tells Reacher that nobody knows the three of them are here. They’re treating them like enemy combatants on U.S. soil. They can do whatever they want. Now, he might be able to take it for a while. But how does he thinks they’ll hold up?

Wynken orders the agents to take away Reacher. Bring him the woman. Reacher tells Wynken that he will answer his questions. Wynken ask Reacher where is the drive that Anna Merrick gave to him on the train? Reacher overturns the table. He fights the CIA agents. The agent tries to shoot Reacher. But Reacher makes the agent shoot Wynken. Wynken passes out on the floor after he was shot.

In the office, the doctor tries to report to his boss over the phone that they failed. But Reacher breaks into the office. He shoots the doctor, and he gets the key from the desk. He goes to the basement. Jacob and Tamara are there. Jacob tells Reacher that they thought they were beating him. But Reacher ignores the two. He walks away. Tamara is furious to ask Reacher where he’s going. She thought the guy came to save them. Jacob asks Tamara did Reacher just leave them?

Reacher walks out of the basement. He opens the trunk of a car. He gets a tool from the trunk. He goes back to the basement. He hands over the tool to Tamara. He asks her to hold it. She asks him about the phone. He says company will be here soon. Jacob is very optimistic. He says maybe it’s just a wrong number. But another cell phone rings. Tamara says they’re calling cell phones now. More than one. Means more than one guy’s coming.

She asks Reacher if he gets their guns. He says there were none. Must be locked up. She says they didn’t thin they needed them with him in cuffs. He says they were wrong. Reacher and Tamara work together to open the cell with the jack. She gets out of the cell. He tells her that her wallets are on the table in the other room. She got it. She runs into the room. She sees the CIA agents’ bodies on the floor. She goes to take her wallets. But the agent wakes up. He can reach the cell phone.

She walks to him, and she kicks his face. He passes out again. She says they will leave a message. She returns to the basement when Reacher is trying to break Jacob’s cell. She tells the two that they’re running out of time.

The three run out of the basement. They encounter the car of CIA. They go back to the basement. They hide in the room. Reacher gets Tamara to close the door. They run upstairs when the agent shoots the door. They run out of the basement. They see more agents. Reacher orders Tamara and Jacob to go to the alley with him.

They run to the alley. Reacher places a trash can on the road. So the agent’s car cannot pass it. The agent gets off his car. He chases the three.

The three run alone the alley. A car blocks their way. The guy in the car asks them to get in. He says he’s not CIA. They get in the car when the agents shoot them. I don’t understand why CIA shoots them. If they die, they won’t get any clues.

Reacher asks the guy who he is. The guy says he’s Russell Plum. Freelance journalist. He saw them bring Reacher in on a gurney yesterday, and Tamara and Jacob were carried in a few hours later. He has been watching that building for weeks.

Reacher asks Russell why he did that. Russell says he figured it was a CIA black site, and he was right. He saw them trying to escape, so he came to help. Tamara asks Russell about his goal. He says he does it for his story. They’re gonna blow the lid off what’s going on in there. He asks the three what’s going on in there? Tamara asks Jacob to answer Russell. But Jacob doesn’t know. She asks him what was his sister involved in that she got snatched by the CIA.

He says he has no idea. Anna worked for the Pentagon, so whatever’s on the jump drives they’re looking for has to be military related. Reacher says they need to know for sure. Tamara asks him how are they gonna find out? He says he has someone who can help. Just got to get down to D.C. Russell asks Reacher to look out his window. They’re in D.C. Jacob wonders what is going on?

Russell drives his car into an underground parking garage. Reacher gets off the car. Russell takes off the poster on the door of his car. He tells Reacher that he’s investigating the world’s most secretive agency. He uses precaution.

He takes the three into his office. Reacher notices the pen on the table. Russell says pen is mightier than the sword. Reacher says depends on who’s wielding the sword. Russell claims that all he needs is a pen. Reacher will see. Russell says he has been investigating the CIA for years. Because they’re involved in all kinds of shady that the public needs to know about. They trained Manson, covered up Kennedy, got him fired from The Washington Post. Now he just has to prove all of it.

Tamara asks Russell if he wrote for the Post. He says he did it. Then the Examiner. Then the Washington City Paper. Then a few free periodicals. None of them wanted the truth. They’re all beholden to their corporate and political overlords. Now he’s strictly Internet-Based. He gives it directly to the people. No filters.

Jacob looks out the window. He finds out that they’re across the street from the CIA building. Russell asks Jacob to stay away from the window. Tamara asks Jacob are they safe here? Reacher says probably. They know they got away in a vehicle. It’s unlikely they’d look for them on their own block.

Russell agrees with what Reacher said. He circled around the back and came in through the rear entrance. Nobody knows they’re here. He asks Reacher if he wants to watch them. He hid cameras all over the roof. Reacher checks the video. He sees himself being carried into the basement by CIA. He mentions most people who work for the CIA don’t know where the black sites are. He asks Russell how did he know it?

Russell explains it to Reacher that he traced payments for construction work done on one of the exposed overseas black sites through a maze of shell companies. Now, one of those shells was connected to an LLC that has no visible income but somehow was able to purchase that building across the street. So he looked at a map and checked it out. It’s over one of the old steam tunnels that runs under Embassy Row. There has to be an illegal CIA spy op. So, got a sweat off-the-books deal for this loft. Because the building is condemned.

Landlord’s fighting it in court but he’s desperate for cash flow. Set up shop and he started watching. And then he sees them bringing in steel plating and welding equipment. He assumes it was for cages. Russell asks Reacher did they lock them in cages? Reacher admits it. Russell laughs. He’s gonna blow the lid off this thing. He’s gonna win his Pulitzer. He needs Reacher and his friends’ testimony.

Reacher refuses to give the testimony to Russell. Russell reminds Reacher that he saved them. Reacher asks Russell to forget he ever met them. He has stumbled into something way bigger than he can handle. Tamara tells Russell that people died over this. She thinks he doesn’t want to be next. She asks Reacher what do they do now? He thought she was just gonna ride it out till she gets her pension. She says she was drugged and taken 150 miles from her home. She’s in it now. He says public transportation’s risky with the CIA looking for them.

Jacob says his sister was on the train in Philly. So her car’s still got to be in her garage. She lived near here. But Reacher thinks they’ve probably ransacked the place already. Odds are it’s safe to go. Keep their heads on a swivel. He decides to go look for John Sampson.

Tamara knows Sampson is the congressman. She asks Reacher what does the guy have to do with this? He says he’s gonna find out. He sees the burners. Russell tells Reacher that he can take it. Reacher gives the burners to Tamara and Jacob. He tells them that he has already memorized their numbers. He will text them his number. Call him after they get the car. Russell wants to do something for Reacher. Reacher asks the guy to look for a new place to live. He leaves his house.

Reacher walks into Sampson’s office to look for the guy. The lady takes care of him. He leaves a note to Sampson. He asks the lady to tell Sampson that he will be at the food trucks by the National Mall. Tamara and Jacob get in Anna’s house. They see the mess. Tamara realizes that someone was looking for the drive. Jacob picks up the broken photo on the floor. It’s Ben. Jacob wishes Ben would call him back. He worries about him. Tamara comforts her partner that college kids are so.

She reveals she’d go days before calling her mother back. I guess Ben was kidnapped. Jacob says there’s the garage. He will get the keys. He looks for the keys on the table. But they’re not here. She tells him that he should forget the keys. She asks him where’s the car? He doesn’t know. He finds Anna’s Pentagon employee badge. Under some old mail. Like she hasn’t used the house in a few weeks. She figures it out that his sister must have left in a hurry. She sees the food on the table. So Anna didn’t even finish her meal. The food is still warm.

The guy shows up. He beats Jacob. Tamara joins the fight. She stuns the guy before he takes out his gun. She tells Jacob that she just returns the favor.

Reacher eats at the mall. A car shows up. Elspeth Sampson gets off the car. She’s the congressman’s wife. She introduces their head of security, Springfield to Reacher. Springfield thinks Reacher was very smart. He left his full name and rank. So they could look him up, know who they’re dealing with. Otherwise they might not have come.

Elspeth mentions Reacher said he was one of John’s constituents, but records don’t show a North Carolina address. Or any address. Reacher says he doesn’t have one. He served in North Carolina three times, though, so he figured that was close enough. She asks him why did he choose to meet here? He says he hadn’t eaten since yesterday. She asks him why not? He says because he was drugged and abducted by the CIA. She allows him to finish his meal. He says most scandals involve something the wife doesn’t know about. Sending her was a statement.

She tells him that John didn’t send her. She wanted to see for herself if he was worth his time or if this is just some pathetic attempt at blackmail. He tells her that he doesn’t want anything from her husband except the truth. A Pentagon clerk killed herself in front of him, night before last. She asks him with John’s name on her lips? He says basically. But she says “basically” doesn’t cut it. Why does he thinks her husband has anything to do with this?

He says with respect, his questions concern matters her husband probably wouldn’t share with her, so even if he asked, it’s unlikely she’d know the answer. She says John and she have no secrets. He says maybe. Springfield gives a note to Reacher. He tells him that hotel, few blocks from here. Congressman’s speaking at a dinner there tonight. He’s in his suite now, preparing. Elspeth tells Reacher that her husband will be expecting him. He gets five minutes of his time, not one second more.

Elspeth and Springfield try to leave. But Reacher asks them to give him a ride. Elspeth says she could. Reacher walks away.

At Anna’s house, Jacob ties the guy up. He says that should hold him. Tamara tells Jacob that she will hold on to the guy’s Glock. She thinks he could use a weapon. She asks him if his sister keeps any guns in the house. He says there’s the one. But she’s dead. Tamara feels sorry after she talked about Jacob’s sister in front of him. She figures it out that if that was the CIA, they’d be calling this guy’s cell.

Jacob grabs the phone from the wall. He asks Tamara to pretend she’s Anna. She takes over the phone from him. She talks to the guy over the phone. She hands up. She tells Jacob that it was one of Ben’s football coaches. Ben never showed for practice.

Reacher goes to the hotel to see Sampson. But he sees Snap and the B-Team. Snap tells Reacher that they need a talk. Reacher walks into the suite. Snap tells Reacher that he’s in big trouble. He told them Anna Merrick didn’t say anything to him on the subway. Reacher claims that Anna didn’t say anything that night. But that’s not what he wrote in the note that he sent to the congressman.

Snap takes out the note. He tells Reacher that he lied to federal investigators. People go to prison for that. Reacher points out that those guys didn’t identify themselves. They could’ve been anybody. The guy asks Reacher if they showed him some ID he would have told them the truth? Reacher says sure.

Snap asks Reacher did Anna say John Sampson’s name? Reacher says no. Snap asks Reacher where did he hear it? Reacher says from the CIA. Snap asks Reacher when did he talk to the CIA? Reacher says he got it when they kidnapped him. Snap asks Reacher why would the CIA kidnap him? Reacher says they think he knows something. He knows they’re running an illegal black site out of an old building on the corner of Hopkins and P. He tells B-Team that they can go to see it on their own. The way he sees it, the CIA knows way more about this than he does.

Snap asks Reacher if he wants some advice. He tells him that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he saw the wrong thing. Something bad happened in front of him, as a former investigator, he wants to look into it. Because his instincts say that things don’t smell right. But this is not a case he’s gonna close. Walk away. Because he he keeps sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong, he’s gonna get it cut off.

Reacher leaves the hotel. He calls Tamara. He asks her if she has any trouble. She says nothing they couldn’t handle. She asks about him. He says same. He asks her to pick him up. She says she cannot. Because Anna’s car isn’t here. She had Docherty put out a BOLO. He guesses federal agents could have taken the car to search it. But they tossed the house. Probably could have searched the car in the garage at the same time. He thinks maybe it was stolen. That’d be quite a coincidence. Coincidences are rare. So what they’re left with is Anna drove her car to Philly. Then, for some reason, got out and got on the subway.

Jacob asks Reacher why would Anna do that? Reacher has no idea. He asks Jacob anything else? Jacob reveals Ben missed football practice. He’s on scholarship. Knows if he screws up, he’ll lose it. Jacob doesn’t care what that woman Ben met looks like, he’s not risking his full ride for any girl. They’ve got to get back to Philly and find him. Tamara says public transpo’s out. They need a car. Reacher says he knows someone who has a car they can borrow.

He visits Russell. Russell asks Reacher anybody see him come in? Reacher says he came in the back. Russell says it’s good. Because two guys in suits driving a sedan with government plates just pulled into the black site. Wouldn’t be CIA with those plates. Could be FBI or NSA, but they like to use generic state plates, not draw attention. He guesses they’re DCSA, maybe DCIS. They kicked in the door, they went inside. They’re not gonna find anything, because the CIA bugged out just before they got there.

There goes Russell’s story. Place is completely cleared out now. Russell wonders how they found out about the black site. Reacher confesses it to Russell that he told them. Because he wants to give the CIA something to worry about besides them. He tells Russell that he needs his help. Russell knew Reacher would come around. Reacher says before they go, he needs a new burner. For all he knows, they grabbed the signal off his during his meeting with the feds. Could be trying to track it right now.

Russell goes to pack his stuff. He comforts Reacher that he’s a valuable asset. He can dig up any information he needs. He won’t be sorry. He’s gonna need his full background for his article. He can tell he’s former military by the way he carries himself. His pointed questions and limited answers, makes him think he’s some kind of investigator. But Reacher steals Russell’s car key. He flees.

Reacher, Jacob and Tamara go to Ben’s school. They try to get where Ben went. The guy tries to run away. He seems suspicious. Reacher and Tamara work together to catch the guy. The guy’s name is Colin. Jacob persuades Colin that Ben’s mother is dead. They need to find Ben. Colin agrees to leak something. But he doesn’t want Tamara to be there. So Tamara walks to the car.

Colin says he doesn’t know where Ben is, but he knew that girl, the one he left with the other night. She’s an OnlyFans model. Colin bought her socks ever. He recognized her when she walked into the bar and started talking to Ben. Reacher and Jacob join Tamara in the car. Reacher complains it to Tamara that society is going to be over.

Tamara takes Reacher and Jacob to the police station. She asks Shaun if he found anything about the girl. He says the girl’s real name is Mary Ellen Daniels. Online, she goes by “Smellen Degenerate.” She sells her body when someone pays her high price. Jacob doesn’t believe that Ben would do that. Reacher asks Shaun does he has an address? Shaun mentions Feds took the suicide case away from them. He reminds Tamara that her partner is him, not Deputy Dawg and HoboCop. She says Anna is a missing person in their jurisdiction. She’s doing her job. Now give her the address.

Tamara, Reacher and Jacob go to the girl’s house. Tamara knocks at the door. She calls Daniels. Daniels doesn’t give Tamara an answer. So Reacher kicks the door open. The three get in the house. They find out that the girl dies in the bed. Reacher says whoever did this weren’t amateurs. These cuts were designed to cause maximize pain and suffering while keeping her alive. They took their time. Saved the kill cut for last.

Tamara says so they enjoyed themselves. Reacher reveals the guys who came after him and Lila were skilled with knives. This could have been them. M.E. needs to take a look at the knife the guy that took a run at him used, see if it matches these wounds. She agrees. She asks him where is the knife? He says in a coal bin in the basement of the main branch of the Philly Public Library. Next to the guy’s body. She mentions he said they both got away. He lied. She doesn’t like that. They work together, they share information. He should have told her yesterday. He says she didn’t need to know yesterday. Now she does. Besides, it was self-defense. She says she will call it in to the anonymous tip line. Techs can check his prints against whatever they find in this apartment. She asks him if he sure it was self-defense? He says same way it was self-defense when he took out those CIA guys and saved her.

I can understand why Tamara gets angry. She and Reacher are a team. But he concealed the truth that he killed a person. She even rejected Shaun’s invitation for the guy when Shaun wanted to do the job with her. Because she trusted Reacher, and she wanted to work with him.

Jacob sits on the couch. He didn’t express an opinion when Tamara and Reacher were arguing. He’s not well after he saw the girl’s body. Ben left with the girl. The girl is dead now. I think Jacob worries that Ben would be killed like the girl.

Tamara notices that Jacob is silent. She asks him if he’s fine. He says he grew up in a small town. He liked it there. The pace. The people. And he became a cop, like his father to protect that town. But, honestly, wearing a badge in Mayfield, it doesn’t ask very much. Breaking up teenagers drinking behind the high school. Letting them set off ladyfingers on the Fourth of July, but take their M-80s. He has never had to draw his gun, much less see anything like what’s in that room.

Jacob is suitable for the town. He wouldn’t see those terrible things if he didn’t come to the city with Reacher. But he should experience it since he’s in the team. Reacher doesn’t look down on Jacob after knowing he’s a naive cop. Tamara wants to send Jacob somewhere. He can call his friend, and his friend will take him back to Jersey. But he doesn’t want to return to Jersey. He wants to protect Ben as an uncle. Bloodline is so powerful. It can turn a coward into a hero.

Jacob mentions people who sliced up that girl have his nephew. He doesn’t care if it costs him his life, he’s gonna get Ben back and he’s gonna figure out what drove his sister to do what she did. And then he’s gonna find who did all this. He will make them pay. Reacher tells Jacob that they’re on the same page. He agrees to take him even if he knows he will be a burden of the team.

Jacob walks away. Tamara tells Reacher that some might think Jacob’s nephew did it. It’s possible. Ben meets a woman, goes home with her, she doesn’t want to go all the way, so he’s carving her up. He runs, calls mother and confesses, she cannot take knowing her sweet boy’s a killer, so she feeds herself a bullet.

Reacher points out that in this theory, Anna Merrick gets a confessional call from Ben, so she takes her gun, puts on a winter coat in summer, drives hours from home, parks the car, gets on the subway and shoots herself in the head. On the same night she just happens to be smuggling confidential documents out of the Pentagon.

She agrees with what he said. But she has to call this in and Ben was the last person seen with her. Either way, if he’s still alive. She hopes he is. He’s in big trouble. Not to mention, they don’t even know where to start looking for him. They have no idea what’s going on here. He decides to go to talk to Sampson for the truth. She reminds him that the guy tricked him the last time. Why he thinks he won’t do it again? He says he knows where the guy is this time. He knows how to get his undivided attention. He sees a cat before he leaves the house.

In the car, the team has grown to four members. In the evening, they arrive at the hotel. Reacher hands over the cat to Tamara. He gets off the car, and he walks into the hotel. He finds Sampson after the guy gave a speech that honesty is what they should do. He wants to have a talk with him.

Springfield tries to block Reacher. But Sampson stops his bodyguard. He says it’s fine. Reacher tells Sampson that he has a second dead woman to discuss with him. He asks him if he wants to talk about it in front of the media. Sampson laughs. He takes Reacher to the room. But he only give him five minutes.

Reacher says a girl last seen with Anna Merrick’s missing son was murdered. They just found the body a couple hours ago. Elspeth thinks the girl’s murder’s a coincidence after knowing she wasn’t a respectable girl. But he says coincidences are rare. Sampson tells Reacher that when he saw his military record, he told those federal boys that he’d be a hard man to scare away.

Reacher asks Sampson why is the CIA involved? Sampson doesn’t know. He got nothing to do with the CIA. Reacher asks Sampson would he tell him if he did? Sampson says probably not. But he wouldn’t pretend not to know. Because he doesn’t have time for it. Reacher asks Sampson did he know Anna Merrick? Sampson says never head of her before early yesterday morning, when he got a courtesy call from those feds who told him that she might be involved in a minor date breach.

Elspeth asks Reacher did Anna really say her husband’s name before she died, or did he get it from the CIA like he told the investigators? He says neither. She tells him that he’s a liar. He says sometimes. Sampson asks Reacher who did he hear his name from? Reacher says from someone who said the date Anna Merrick took was connected to a Delta mission Sampson was on in Indonesia back in the ’90s.

Sampson says Anna Merrick worked for Human Resources Command. Specific Delta mission information is locked away where an HRC file clerk couldn’t get to it even if she wanted to. Anna Merrick couldn’t have had access to anything more than general details. Dates and units and such.

Reacher tells Sampson that the person who gave him his name wouldn’t need more than that to prove what she’s trying to prove. Sampson asks Reacher which is? Reacher says something of a delicate nature. Sampson claims that his wife’s tougher than them covered in cowhide. So, whatever he got, say it. Reacher tells Sampson that dates and units are more than enough to prove that he were in-country when his source was conceived.

Sampson asks Reacher if he thinks he has an affair? That there’s some love child out there looking for father? He can absolutely assure him that when he was in-country, his powder wasn’t the only thing he kept dry. If his DNA is all it’s gonna take to get him to leave them alone. He spits into the glass. He tries to hand over his DNA to him. He asks him to go to run the test. He tells him that he will see that he did not father any children in Indonesia.

Reacher says that won’t be necessary. He believes Sampson. He was fooled by a woman who pretended to be innocent. Sampson tell Reacher that he just had to come and look at him in the eye and ask him the question. But he had already begun to suspect that there was more to this than what he has been told. Reacher doesn’t understand why the CIA kidnapped three people for a fake rumor. Sampson doesn’t understand it as well. He promises Reacher that he and his people didn’t commit any crime.

Elspeth says her husband’s been in the political spotlight long enough that if there was anything to find, some muckraker would’ve found it by now. But Reacher doesn’t believe Anna Merrick didn’t kill herself over nothing. Sampson agrees with what Reacher said. But it was nothing to do with him. He suggests that Reacher stands down, let the authorities handle it. But Reacher says he cannot do that. He has his reasons.

Elspeth hopes the Merrick boy turns up safe and they’re truly saddened to hear that his mother felt compelled to take her own life. But there’s nothing more they can do. Reacher didn’t tell Elspeth about Anna’s son. How does she know it? Elspeth says they need to get to Baltimore. Fundraiser, first thing in the morning, and it’s late, so if he will excuse them. He leaves the room.

Reacher walks out of the hotel. Jacob is waiting for Reacher. He asks him how’d it go? Reacher says he doesn’t believe Sampson’s behind this. Tamara asks him who did it. Sampson and his wife show up. They get in the car. Reacher notices the guy who talks to Sampson. He’s told that the guy is Nolan Cahill. Sampson’s chief of staff. Tamara asks Reacher what happened. He mentions he said there was a fourth witness on the train when Anna killed herself. Nolan was the guy.
