Dan interviews Lestat. Lestat tells Dan that he’s immortal. The light of the sun, the sustained heat of an intense fire, Jefferson Starship, garrote-wielding coven members, these things might destroy him. He laughs.

Dan mentions what Lestat told him that the songs are his story. He knows he doesn’t want to talk about himself. He offers to dig into the songs and see what they get. Lestat has a song, “Long Face”. The lyrics are, “Ooh, ooh, ooh, wah-ah.” Dan wants to know the story behind it. Lestat says that “Long Face” is an agreement between himself and the audience, permission disguised as anthem.

He claims that he doesn’t do promises. Lestat complains it to Dan that he has had 40 shows in 43 nights. Nobody cares what he was before. Dan tells Lestat that nobody cares for him. Because he flatlined at 1,000-capacity venues. Lestat talks back that it’s not about asses on seats or streams on Pandora. It’s about pure expression.

Marguerite Doree, Jean Bodin, the twins Marthe and Amiee Roulet. Ceased their prayers and adored the devil in ceremony, said the torch-bearing priests.

Dan learns that Lestat if he remembers their names. Lestat says that teenage girls with the resonant voices of men screaming and thrashing for hours till their jawbones fell and the devil could sing no more. Lestat was nine. He looks back on it now. He thinks those girls were witches. Dan asks Lestat what happened at 29. Lestat hears music. He made it to Paris.

It flashes back. Lestat walks on the street. He sees a guy who plays the violin. He thinks he’s angel. Because he hasn’t seen much of the world. A madam throws water at the guy from upstairs. She tells him that she won’t miss it next time. He guesses it must be Herr Mozart rising over all that disturbs her peace.

At present, Dan learns that the guy is Nicky, who Lestat sings about in his song, “Why Do I Have to Feel?” Lestat reveals Nicolas de Lenfent is his first love.

He knows it’s his father’s stitching. Lestat tells Nicolas that his father gave it to him before he left the village. They see the marchers outside the window. Nicolas says that pity is treason.

Lestat tells Nicolas that he played beautifully. But Nicolas thinks he played like a tailor’s son. Nicolas asks Lestat what his father said to him. Lestat tells Nicolas that his father asked him to tell him that he loves him and he’s proud of him. Nicolas laughs. He knows Lestat lied. He asks him what his father really said. Lestat reveals Nicolas’s father asked him to help Nicolas be a man. Nicolas asks Lestat if he’s gonna teacher him to be a man.

At present, Lestat tells Dan that Nicolas is a vampire now. But Lestat isn’t a vampire. He’s the stuttering ape of Auvergne. Lestat sings a song. He says that it’s vocal exercises repeated every day for two years while he washed the floor at the theatre. Nicolas got the job for him. Dan asks someone to go pull up the song for Lestat.

Lestat takes over the tablet from someone. He plays the song. Dan mentions Lestat buried himself in the ground for a century over a not-great love. The only thing he carries to New Orleans is a music box reminder of a not-great love. Lestat explains it to Dan that he carried the box because he ruined Nicolas. He carries the box to remind him what he could do.

Dan learns that Lestat sings a song every night by his abuser. Lestat says that it’s the biggest fan. He laughs after Dan called his fan abuser. Dan asks Lestat if Magnus asked his permission before transforming him into a vampire when Lestat gets the tablet again. He mentions what Louis said that Magnus took Lestat from his room in Paris as he kicked and screamed. Locked him in a room for a week with corpses. But Lestat says that it wasn’t him. Dan ignores Lestat. He goes on to say that Magnus fed on Lestat for a week. Lestat thought he would be one of them. But Magnus turned him into this. Lestat tells Dan that Louis wasn’t there when Magnus kidnapped him. But Dan points out that Louis was in New Orleans when Lestat recounted it.

Lestat says that he wasn’t in Dubai to correct Louis’s faulty recall. He laughs. He understands his maker. If he had seen 19 straight performances of my Lelio, he would have abandoned all decorum as well. Dan points out that Magnus made Lestat a monster and killed himself in front of him. Lestat says that he was an actor at a second-tier theatre, squatting in a beheaded nobleman’s flat with a severely depressed lover. As for the suicide, it gave him a lightness that he wouldn’t have known had he loitered the centuries beside him.

He can tell the burden written on Dan’s face. When he says god he says monster. He asks him if it’s his absent but very much alive father walking around that gives him the lowly idea of himself. Dan teases Lestat that it must have been hard keeping that from Nicolas. He brings up that Armand confronted Lestat on the street, kidnapped Nicolas, fed him to his coven. And yet, Lestat hid his vampirism from Nicolas.

It flashes back. Lestat carries Nicolas into their room in Paris. He tells him that he’s safe. But Nicolas asks Lestat why he’s so weak. Lestat comforts Nicolas that he has typhoid. Nicolas asks Lestat why his mother is still alive.

He guesses Louis has told it to Dan. But Dan denies it. He asks Lestat where his mother is. Lestat says that his mother died. Dan asks Lestat what he thinks about the Great Conversion. Lestat thinks vampires take over the world, collaborating.

It flashes back. Nicolas tells Gabriella that his bones would be pieces. Lestat wants to buy his mother a new house so that she doesn’t have to fight Nicolas. But she doesn’t need the house. Nicolas asks Lestat if he gave the witchery to his mother. Lestat explains it to Nicolas that his mother was an hour from death. He asks him if he wants him to kill him. Nicolas yells at Lestat. He wants him to prove his love. He returns to his room. Gabriella persuades her son not to do that. But he thinks he has to do it. Because he was the one who drove Nicolas mad. He thinks he shouldn’t let him face the madness.

Gabriella reminds Lestat that he has used up his affection for the guy. She asks him not to bring Nicolas into eternity. It will be disaster. He ignores her. He gets in the room with Nicolas. Nicolas plays the violin at the theater after he was reborn. He’s excited to tell the people that he wants to turn the theater into a vampire theater. Lestat’s vampire friends are shocked after they heard the guy’s words.

Nicolas is anxious to look for his letter opener. Lestat suggests that Nicolas should leave the theater. But Nicolas runs off in a frenzy. Gabriella mentions what she told Lestat that the guy’s mind is curdled. Nicolas blames Lestat for opening up his letter. He lifts the axe and cuts his hand. He asks Lestat to cut the other hand. He throws his hand into the fire. He asks him to forgive him. He cries in his arms. Lestat asks his mother to go to coffin. Because he loves Nicolas more than her. But he pushes the guy into fire.
