Josh walks into Kel’s room in Not Suitable for Work episode 7. He tries to wake up Kel. He wants to tell something to him. But Kel says that it’s not the time. Josh sees Kate in the bed then. He’s very happy that she came back. He tells Kel that AJ is seeing someone. The guy is her boss. He’s on the mug. He’s also Davis’s boss. Kate thinks it’s a huge news.

Davis worships Bill. He’s his emergency contact in his phone. Kel doesn’t know what to do. He and Josh promised they wouldn’t keep secrets from him. Josh thinks there’s only one way. A Steak and Tears. It’s the tradition Josh and Kel have where when one of them has to deal with some terrible news. They surprise them with a dinner at a fancy steakhouse. They let them cry it out over a T-bone and a million martinis. By the time the lava cake comes, the pain’s out of their system. They can go back to being a fun hang. They deal with their feelings the same way Jon Hamm does.
At Abby’s house, Abby sings a birthday song for AJ. She stops. Because she knows she doesn’t have patience for the famously short song. AJ takes overs the newspaper from Abby. She feels so seen. Abby knows AJ’s mother is coming down from Boston to celebrate. But she wants to pamper her beautiful baby girl first. AJ finds out that Abby made her favorite breakfast. Protein bar, black coffee, and a hard copy Wall Street Journal.
Abby asks AJ about Bill’s plans. AJ didn’t tell the guy it was her birthday. Abby suggests that AJ should give Bill time to ask his secretary to buy her jewels. But AJ doesn’t want to give Bill the impossible challenge buying a birthday gift for a new girlfriend.
Abby doesn’t understand why AJ lets the guy off the hook. She complains it to her that she went to a newsstand in Penn Station for the grandpa stuff. AJ laughs after knowing what her friend did for her. The woman knocks at the door. She claims that she’s the drug police. AJ opens the door. She sees her mother with a suitcase. Her mother says that she was just kidding. She has been watching Ozark.
AJ gives her mother a hug. AJ’s mother takes a look at AJ. She finds out that her girl has grown up. She tells her that she’s like one of those stewardesses that only does first class. She gives Abby a hug. Abby tells AJ’s mother Mrs. P that she knows she doesn’t have the time. She asks her not to be pressure. Mrs. P gets Abby’s point. She asks her to do something on her brows and bikini. She brought her kit. She just got a new type of wax.
AJ wants to do something before she goes to work. But Mrs. P tells AJ that she doesn’t have to worry about her. She offers to go see Chicago after she’s off work. AJ tells her mother that she cannot go see the show with her. Mrs. P is shocked after knowing her daughter needs to work overtime on her birthday. AJ promises Mrs. P they will do a special dinner tomorrow. Mrs. P points out that tomorrow isn’t AJ’s birthday. AJ tells Mrs. P that the best present is that she came.
Mrs. P says that it’s the second best present. Because she prepared a present for AJ. She hands over the present to AJ. It’s a T-shirt.
At Josh’s house, Davis decides to use Josh’s toothbrush. He cannot find his toothbrush. Josh goes against it. But he’s told Davis used Kel’s toothbrush. He offers to go to have a dinner. Davis thinks it’s a good idea.
In the acting classroom, Kel is teaching. The girl Beth wants to talk about the winter formal. Her boyfriend Rocco will attend it. He will bring his friends. They’re all smokeshows and their parents give them HGH shots. Beth asks other girls to work hard. She wants to see professional hair and makeup.
At the network, Josh talks with his mother over the phone. He’s told that his father is leaving her. He visits his father. He wants to know the reason. His father reminds him that his mother already left him years ago emotionally. But Josh doesn’t think so. He tells his father that his mother still likes him. She got her eyelids done for him. Josh’s father knows it. But his wife’s eyes are always so dry. Every room in the house has her disgusting little eye drops in them.
Josh tells his father that it’s not the reason for divorce. He wants to know what happened. Josh’s father mentions he had his portrait commissioned last year. It came back last week. He looks great. But Josh’s mother looks distinguished. Josh realizes that his father wants to leave his mother because she’s too old. He tells his father that she’s way younger than him. Josh’s father says that the lady makes him feel old. He knows it’s hard for Josh. But his father is just a man. He’s not a superman.
He needs a piece of equipment to keep his heart beating. He will always love Josh’s mother, but it’s time for him to move on. Josh’s father asks Josh if he has his cute high school English teacher’s email. The lady and him had real chemistry.
Abby walks on the street. She sees her ad. She’s excited to take a photo of the ad. The guy expresses that he loves the shirt that the model wears. He wants to look. Abby reveals she styled it. She tries to help the guy get the shirt. But it’s sold out. It’s great news.
Kel goes to an audition. But he’s rejected. Because he didn’t make an appointment. He leaves the hotel. He runs into his two students Sarah and Marina. He tells the two that they missed a great lesson. Sarah claims that they didn’t have a choice. Marina reveals Phillipa Soo was only was only sitting in for the one performance. Kel blames the two girls for impersonating their mothers to get out of school. He’s going to tell it to their parents and the school.
Marina begs Kel to forgive them. She says that they did it because it was the only way. She thinks he would tell a lie for something he wanted to get.
In the evening, AJ is working in the office. But Mrs. P shows up with a birthday cake. She thinks everybody should get a birthday surprise. Bill is furious to show up. He tells Mrs. P that it’s a workplace. She scolds him. AJ stops her mother. She introduces her to Bill. She just brought her a birthday cake. Bill leaves after knowing it’s AJ’s birthday. Mrs. P tells AJ that the guy deserves a beating like her father.
At the restaurant, Davis tells Kel that the two stuffed mushrooms are for Josh. But he wants to eat one more. Kel asks Davis to pretend to be his agent so that he can get an audition. Davis gets in the role immediately. He says that he’s an investment banker. He knows how to be unethical. He’s happy that there’s no Steak and Tears tonight. He suspected it. But Kel tells Davis that they should wait for Josh. Davis realizes that it’s a Steak and Tears.
Josh shows up. He tells his friends that his father is leaving his mother. Davis figures out that reason why Josh needs them. He offers to order a passion fruit Cosmo stat for Josh. He believes that the drink will cheer him up.
AJ takes Mrs. P into the room. She tells her that she shouldn’t barge into her work. She thinks she doesn’t get it because she doesn’t have a career. Mrs. P is hurt by her daughter’s words. She’s angry to leave the bank.
Back to the restaurant, Josh tells his friends that he thought his father was perfect. Davis admits that Josh’s father took them on the yacht. He tried to do the “king of the world”. But Josh’s father pushed him overboard and called him gay. Josh asks Davis if he got the picture. He realizes that his father is jerk. He cries.
The next day, Abby accompanies AJ to eat outside the building. AJ tells Abby that she doesn’t want to wake her mother up and have her yell at her again. Abby thinks AJ is too hard on her mother. She tells her friend that her mother is fun. She mentions her mother forgot her birthday.
Josh is angry to run out of the building. He tries to through the clothes into the trash can. AJ asks the guy what he’s doing. He reveals he’s throwing his father’s sweaters away. He’s leaving his mother. Abby knows the sweater is a Loro Piana. She thinks Josh is crazy. He says that he doesn’t want a trace of the guy in his life. His parents were the perfect couple.
AJ tells Josh that her father left when she was two years old. But he thinks his situation is sadder. Because he knows what happened to him. He doesn’t need the fancy watch. He tries to throw it away. But Abby wants to take the watch.
At Josh’s house, Kel realizes that Davis shouldn’t pretend to be his agent. But Davis tells Kel that they cannot turn back. He’s already in character. He takes out the hat that he borrowed from Josh. Josh’s grandpa died in it.
On the set, Abby finds Austin. She wants to arrange him to work with Rafe. He agrees even if he looks very busy. Davis walks out of his house. He sees the angry Mrs. P. She complains it to him that she just left her daughter’s house. But she left her HRT meds on the bathroom counter. She doesn’t have the keys. She’s too proud to text AJ at work. Because AJ was really annoying.
Davis learns that Mrs. P is AJ’s mother. Her name is Amy. She’s surprised that he knows it. He reveals AJ is his colleague. He wants to help Amy. But she asks him to explain his outfit to her. Kel gets a chance to audition because Davis made a phone call. Harris knows Kel doesn’t have any agent. But he still wants to see his talent.
Abby finds Rafe at the restaurant. She persuades him to work with Austin. He agrees. Outside Davis’s house, Amy complains it to Davis that AJ yelled at her in the office. He tells her that AJ was sad after she yelled at her. He takes AJ’s side. He tells Amy that he and AJ are always under so much pressure. He thinks she should be proud. Because her daughter did a good job.
Amy mentions her daughter has been telling her that she likes her colleague. She guesses Davis is the guy. She wants to wait for her daughter at his place.
At the network, Josh’s father visits Josh’s boss Wes. He doesn’t want him to cover his divorce. He spills the coffee of Josh’s colleague. Josh asks his father David to clean it up. But Wes gets the colleague Warren to clean it. David thinks what his son said was right. He cleans Warren’s desk and the floor.
In the acting classroom, Kel meets Sarah and Marina. Sarah mistakes that the teacher is going to punish them for ditching. She worries that her parents will force her to sell her doll. Kel tells the two girls that he won’t report them. He mentions they did to to follow their passion. They flatter him.
Kel gets a call from Davis. Davis brings a bad news to his friend that he didn’t get the lead in Jeremy’s play. Kel accepts the result. He tells Davis that he’s a great agent. Davis reveals those guys gave Kel another role. He only has two lines. Davis thinks Kel deserves the best. He wants to reject it for him. But Kel is excited after knowing he got a role.
AJ returns home. She apologizes to Amy. She thinks she shouldn’t have talked to her like that. Amy gets AJ to sit with her on the couch. She explains it to her that she was just worrying about her. She notices that her daughter is changed. She tells her that she was great before she got the job.
AJ receives a birthday card. The car was sent by Bill. He apologizes to Amy for yelling at her. AJ shows Amy the tickets. She asks her if she wants to go see Chicago tonight.

Austin visits Abby when she’s packing her stuff. She tells him that she has been thinking of so many great ideas for the campaign. She calls him her famous brand ambassador. But he gives her some palo santo sticks. He tells her that she can use it to cleanse the negative energy.
In Josh’s house, Kel is surprised that Josh fought his father. Josh thinks David deserves it. Because David bullied his mother. Kel reminds Josh that David will get angry. He mentions David pays for his whole life. Davis shows up with some flowers. The flowers are for AJ. It’s time to take action after Davis had a talk with AJ’s mother. Davis believes that the madam will be his future mother-in-law. But Kel and Josh tell Davis that the beauty is seeing his boss. Davis drops his flowers. He cries on the couch. Davis tells his roommates that he thought AJ would be his wife. In Abby’s room, Austin tells Abby that she’s fired. She’s furious to kick him out of her room.
