He asks him for the drive. Reacher tells the guy that he won’t need it. He shoots his head. Lila picks up the drive on the ground. She and Amisha retreat.

Reacher and Tamara chase Lila and Amisha to the basement. But the two women are missing. Tamara thinks it doesn’t make sense. Staircase is the only way in and out. Reacher opens the the roll-up door. He finds out that the two took the elevator.

Reacher and Tamara run out of the restaurant. Lila and Amisha got away. Reacher and Tamara return to the restaurant. Jacob tries to look for the car key from Russell’s pocket. He wants to take Russell to a hospital. Reacher reminds Jacob that he takes a gunshot victim to the hospital, there will be questions. They could connect him to all this. Tamara tells Jacob that every cop in Philly’s on their way here. They will take care of Russell. But Jacob worries that Russell will die by then. He regrets that he didn’t stay with Russell with him at the library. It’s his fault. He gets the key.

Reacher carries Russell into the car. Tamara notices that Russell wants to say something. He says Leo Ahlquist. Leo is a chemist from the photo. He’s in Dover. Tamara asks Jacob to be careful. He drives the car away. Tamara asks Reacher about his plan. He mentions Lila and Amisha have the drive. She points out that they don’t know why it’s important. He thinks if they did, they would know what they want to do with it. If they knew that, they would know where they’re heading.

She asks him how the hell do they find any of that out? He says Leo is their only lead, and he knows why that photo’s important. They need to track him down. She complains it to him that they’re covered in blood. That stands out, even in Philly. They need to get out of here before anybody knows who they are. Reacher sees the wanted posters of him and Tamara. He tells Tamara that it’s too late.

At Sampson’s house, Springfield checks his cell phone. He reports it to Sampson that Reacher’s face is everywhere. He thinks his name will get dragged into all this. Sampson mentions he got through a Mississippi summer boot camp. OCS with a D.I. who hated his guts, and yet somehow this thing he’s not gonna survive? Elspeth comforts Sampson that it’s not gonna happen. He says they need to figure something out. She agrees with what he said. She mentions he put his arm around Paul Bunyan, called him his old friend in front of the media, and now, he’s public enemy number one.

He asks her do they spin it? She asks him to who? The reporters putting his face up anywhere they can? They smell blood and ratings. Right now, as they speak, they’re looking into him, Cahill’s suicide. How long until they figure out it’s all connected? Indonesia and Anna Merrick? He wants to be the leader of the free world? Then act like it and make some hard decisions because this needs to be resolved now. He mentions Reacher is on the run, desperate, and one wrong turn away from a possible death sentence if he gets caught. His only option is to go after the guy in that photo. Sampson tells Springfield that he finds that man, and he will find Jack Reacher. When he does, he needs to handle it.

Jacob arrives at the hospital. He tells the nurse that he got a GSW to the chest in his car. But she wants to take a look at his neck. He asks her to go help his friend. The nurse leaves. The policewoman shows up. She asks Jacob how’d his buddy get shot? He says he doesn’t know. They were walking down Chestnut. All of a sudden, there was gunfire everywhere. She says their radios have been popping off nonstop since it happened. Looks like something hit him in the neck. He says maybe some flying glass got him. It was total chaos.

Russell is carried into the hospital. The nurse goes to call the doctor. The policewoman tells Jacob that she’s gonna need his statement. He agrees. But he needs to clean up the would on his throat. He will tell her everything he saw. He’s on the way to the nurse station. The policewoman stops him. She tells him that his friend’s phone fell out of his pocket. He takes over the phone from her. He walks away. She finds out that he’s Reacher’s friend. She chases him with another cop.

Outside the building, Reacher and Tamara get changed. She brings up that he slept with the enemy. She thinks Lila wouldn’t know the big scar on his stomach if he wasn’t undressed in front of her. He talks back that he’s undressed in front of her and he doesn’t sleep with her. She tells him that it’s because he’s not her type. She thinks Lila used her body to get him to do what she wants. He says he was already doing what Lila wanted. Tamara asks Reacher so he just that irresistible? He says apparently.

She says end of day, he was in a no-tell motel getting busy with a killer. He says so was Lila. She’s not one to talk. She arrested his ex-boyfriend in a prostitution sting. That was a nice surprise. He learns the reason why she likes Jacob. Jacob is a kind of the anti-Conan type and a good guy. Her last boyfriend wasn’t. She found Leo. Leo is the CEO of Plutus Chemical. Largest producer of pesticides in America. He started in DARPA before founding his company and settling in Dover.

Reacher asks Tamara how far away is the guy from them? She says ninety minutes, depending on traffic. But they don’t have a car. He sees a bus. He thinks they don’t need one.

At the hospital, the two cops search the wards one by one. They don’t find Jacob. Jacob walks out of the ward after the two cops left.

At the bus station, Reacher tells Tamara that when the porter goes around back, they move. She brings up that last time they were on a bus, they got made in ten seconds. He says they’re not going on the bus. They hide in the trunk. He asks her to get comfortable. They’re gonna be in here a while.

Jacob runs out of the hospital. He calls Uncle Monty. Monty is driving. He asks Jacob what happened. He got Philly cops calling him, and he’s all over the news for helping some killer. Jacob says it’s not true. Monty doesn’t believe Jacob. Because Jacob lied to him about calling the FBI. And then, he disappears. Jacob claims that they had no other choice. It’s not just the cops that are after him. Like he said, it’s the Feds. It’s the CIA. He’s terrified. They’re already responsible for Anna and Ben. If they get to him, they’ll kill him as well. A guy he was with, he just got shot.

Monty tells Jacob that they’ll call some people. They’ll figure this out. There’s that criminal defense attorney in Hackensack. The Italian guy. Jacob complains it to Monty that he doesn’t need an attorney. He hasn’t done anything wrong. What he needs is to get out of Philadelphia, but he cannot because everyone is looking for him. He begs him to help him. Monty agrees. He tells Jacob that he’s halfway to Philly already. Jacob asks Monty why he comes the place. Monty explains it to Jacob that He figured he’d be heading back there, and he wanted to get there before the thing got worse. He agrees to help him. But he needs to talk to a lawyer. Jacob gives in. Because he doesn’t know what to do.

In the trunk, Tamara finds out that she has claustrophobia. She says she’s trying to keep her mind off the fact that they’re in a moving metal coffin, and she just ran out of fish. Reacher tells her that she needs to engage her mind in something purely logical. Phobias are emotional reactions to perceived, but unreal, threats. But she says she feels real. He says it’s not. There’s more than enough space and air for both of them, but she’s convinced there isn’t. It’s mid-70s, but she probably thinks it’s hot.

She says it’s warm. He tells her that it isn’t. So, focus her mind on something logical, so her brain won’t have room for nonsense. Nothing more logical than math. He asks her six times six? She says thirty-six. She tells him that he’s pretty nice for a giant killer. Especially after he ducked Anna’s cast at first. She didn’t want to get involved because she just hadn’t been a real cop, doing real police work, for a while. He asks her why’d she stop being a cop and decide to ride it out till she get her pension? She’s too good a detective for that.

She reveals a few years ago, she catches an assault. Drunk college kid slaps a waitress across the face, hard. Lost a tooth. Black eye. Guy was six-two. Waitress, five-three. Had the surveillance footage. Open and shut. Superiors told her to drop the charges. He figures the kid was connected. She says his parents were big donors to the mayor, but it didn’t sit right with her, so she waited till he walked out of some firm he was interning at, and she arrested him in a very public and humiliating way. He guesses his parents loved that. She says they shouldn’t have raised a jerk that hits women. He figures they buried her on last out, and she stopped working hard. She says funniest part? The case, Lila and Amisha, what they did to Anna and Ben, that internet girl, it all got her to work hard again.

She convinced herself she didn’t care, but she never stopped loving the job. Chasing down leads, working the clues the right way. Now that she got that feeling again from this case, it’s this case that’s gonna make her lose her badge and wind up locked up. She thanks Reacher for telling her not to think about emotional things then have her tell him how her career and life are probably ruined. He points out that she’s doing better. She thinks so. She asks him is it getting hot in here?

In a warehouse, the guys are preparing the guns. Amisha shows up. She tells them that buyers are ready and eager to bid. When the auction is over, each one of them will leave this country rich enough to disappear forever, and off to live the life they’ve always fantasized of. Their dream is so close. Don’t let it slip away now. They all know their responsibilities. Work together, work fast, and get the job done.

She joins Lila. She asks her where are they on the code? Lila says very close. Amisha says she needs complete. She asks the guy how much longer? He says he’s just finishing up the prompt now. It’s lengthy, but not so much to overwhelm the AI. He believes it’s ready when Lila wants to kill him. Amisha asks another guy once the program is complete, how long to fabricate? He says something this complex takes time. She tells him that that’s the one thing they don’t have. She asks him is he going to disappoint them? He assures her that she will get what she needs in time. He walks away.

Lila comforts Amisha that everything will work out. She will get this done. Amisha asks Lila why does she have such faith in her? Lila mentions when Amisha found her, panhandling on the streets of Jakarta, she could’ve stolen the little money she had, sold her into slavery, but she took her in, taught her, treated her like she was her own. She’s to her what she was to Putra. She has more than faith in her. She would walk through hell with her. Amisha says if these people they made promises to are disappointed, they just might have to.

Monty finds Jacob at the tennis court. Jacob says He’s fine. He just wants to leave the place. Monty asks Jacob to sit in the back of the police car. Jacob gets in the car. Monty asks Jacob about his friends. He wants to go to pick them up as well. Jacob says the reporter is in the hospital. The cop and the big guy aren’t here. He asks Monty to drive the car. But Monty wants to make sure that they’re all thinking straight here. He tells Jacob that he loves him. But the police show up.

Monty tells Jacob that it’s for the best. Shaun arrests Jacob. He tells Monty that he won’t forgive Jacob. Monty realizes that he was wrong. He tries to protect Jacob. But he cannot do anything.

Tamara and Reacher take the truck to arrive at Leo’s company. They get in the building. Tamara shows her badge to the reception. She asks her to take them to see Leo. Leo tries to destroy the hard drive. Reacher stops the guy. The reception explains it to Leo that the cops insisted. He tells the reception Miranda that it’s fine. He asks her to go find Vance for him.

Miranda walks away. Reacher asks Leo who’s Vance? Leo says Vance is his lawyer. Tamara asks Leo why does an upstanding man like him need a lawyer? Reacher guesses it’s related with the evidence Leo is destroying. Leo says amazing how he just wakes up one morning and he exercises and he takes his vitamins and brush his teeth, and all the time with no idea that that’s the day that the phone is gonna ring and blow everything to hell.

Tamara asks him who called him? He says Nolan Cahill. Chief of staff to John Sampson. Leo thinks Tamara and Reacher know that Nolan rang him up a few days ago about the data leak. He said he had it covered, but he knew Reacher would eventually show up. CIA would never be able to keep a lid on this.

Reacher tells Leo that he wants to know what’s on these servers and how it’s connected to that photo he’s in. Leo laughs. He says he’s not telling Reacher anything until Vance gets here. Reacher tells Leo that he’s gonna pull his fingers back one by one until they snap. First one, he’ll be in shock. Second one, he’ll be in pain. And by the third one, he’ll tell him everything he knows.

Reacher tries to hurt Leo. But Vance shows up with a gun and some guys. He stops Reacher. Leo tells Reacher that Vance isn’t his lawyer. Reacher says that last time he saw Vance, he was working the deep-fry at the bowling alley. He figures the mercenaties have been Leo’s the whole time. Leo admits it. He says they’re quite expensive. Reacher says shame he killed so many of them.

Leo tells Reacher that this all could’ve been avoided. He should’ve just walked out of that police station three days ago, got himself a cheesesteak, and left Philly. But he didn’t, and now, he’s gonna die for it, and he’ll never even know why. He has no idea what that photo really contains. Tamara says real question is, how is a man selling bug spray involved in all this? Leo says this whole mess was never his intention, but the world is complicated. Some eggs get cracked so others get omelets.

She asks him everyone who died, they’re just cracked eggs to him? He tells her that she and Reacher are the same. He leaves his office.

Reacher and Tamara fight the killer. Reacher breaks Vance’s hand with the machine. But he’s stunned by the killer. Vance orders the killers to take the two to the woods and kill them.

Reacher wakes up in the van. Tamara tells him that he rode the lightning pretty hard before getting his head punted. He finds out that he’s tied up. He tells her that they’re off the main road. They’re gonna drive them deep into the woods, and then they’re gonna kill them. Shoot them right here in this van, wrap them up in this tarp and bury them. She asks him anything they can do? He says no. In less than 30 minutes, they’ll both be dead.
