Doctor X: Mafia in White episode 1

The pool player passes out. Tae-Gyeong takes care of the pool player. Su-Jeong hits Tae-Gyeong’s head with her pool cue. She asks him is he a doctor as well? He says he’s a medical intern. He and the pool player’s friend help the pool player up. She tries to take off the pool player’s pants. His friend asks her is she crazy? Hui-Suk asks him does he want his friend to die?

Su-Jeong sends the pool player into the ambulance. She tells Paramedic that the patient has a hernia. She performed a manual reduction. There’s a risk of recurrence. He needs emergency surgery. She’s invited into the ambulance. But she pushes Tae-Gyeong into the ambulance. He wants to know her name when she tries to leave.

In the room at the hotel, Bon-Pyeong gives a speech. He tells his people that Ho-Seok became mayor is just the beginning. Ho-Seok swears he won’t forget his original aspiration.

Yun-Sik walks out of the room to pick up the phone. He’s told that some people resigned. Seung-Gwon comes out of the room. Yun-Sik persuades Seung-Gwon to go back to the room. Seung-Gwon says he wants to go to the restroom. Yun-Sik asks Seung-Gwon not to drink wine. Seung-Gwon complains that those guys should have protected patients. They ate so much meat. He wishes they all have gout. Is there any doctor who deserves to be protected?

In the ambulance, Tae-Gyeong remembers he asked Su-Jeong to tell him her name. She drew a X. She walked away. He was confused.

The next day at the hospital, Myeong-Seop scolds the doctors in his office after knowing the nurses went on strike. It took him a lot of effort to go to check the ward. But he lost his face. He asks his people about the Operating Room. Sun-Ae comforts him that she got someone to take the position.

Tae-Gyeong gets in the doctors’ office. He introduces himself. But he’s ignored. Seong-Gyu tells Tae-Gyeong that he’s his teacher. He should have been polite to him. But the situation doesn’t allow him to do that. The dean said he wanted to check the wards. It means Tae-Gyeong should go with them. Seong-Gyu lets Tae-Gyeong find a seat on his own. He asks him not to resign this week.

Su-Jeong arrives at the hospital. She runs into Myeong-Seop when he’s on the way to the wards with the doctors. She acts cool in front of him. She meets Yun-Sik in his office. He asks her to go to attend the Preoperative Seminar. She nods. Sun-Ae teaches Su-Jeong that she should speak up in response when Yun-Sik is talking to her. The doctor enters the office. He urges the three. Because Myeong-Seop is waiting.

In the auditorium, Heung-Gon reveals Myeong-Seop is going to perform a cholecystectomy on the patient Byeong-Gyu. Myeong-Seop will use the surgical method that he pioneered in person. It’s a rare opportunity that the doctors can witness it.

Su-Jeong says it’s just open surgery. Myeong-Seop is happy to give a speech. He says it’s his last chance to reflect as a surgeon. He will continue to try his best for patients. Yun-Sik asks Heung-Gon and Seong-Gyu to help Myeong-Seop. Myeong-Seop tells others doctors that they can observe the surgery as long as they’re free.

But Su-Jeong objects. She walks to the stage. Tae-Gyeong recognizes her. She takes a look at the X-ray photo of the patient. She thinks they don’t have to perform an open abdominal surgery. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy has been a standard surgical procedure. The patience recovers quickly, and the results are also very consistent. Open abdominal surgery requires the patient to stay in the hospital for ten days. It causes him great harm.

Yun-Sik explains it to Myeong-Seop that Su-Jeong is a locum. Myeong-Seop guesses Su-Jeong relies on machines very much. It’s good. Heung-Gon knows it better than anyone. After all, he’s a famous Laparoscopic expert. The patient is very lucky. He didn’t show any symptoms. The lesion was discovered in the ultrasound examination. But it’s hard to distinguish between Inflammatory Manifestations and Gallbladder Cancer on the photo. Considering the risk of Tumor Metastasis. They must perform open abdominal surgery as long as they suspect the patient may have gallbladder cancer. They shouldn’t blindly pursue minimally invasive procedures.

Heung-Gon agrees with what Myeong-Seop said. Open abdominal surgery is better than Laparoscopic. But Su-Jeong says they should prioritize the patient’s condition. The patient has been 80 years old. He had pneumonia three years ago. They first perform a laparoscopic resection and have a biopsy. They consider if they perform an open abdominal surgery then. Myeong-Seop insists on removing the lesion. He says it’s the best way to save the patient.

She figures it’s rare for him to take on a job. He’s excited. Sun-Ae blames Su-Jeong for using the frivolous word. So Su-Jeong says designated. He was designated after so long, and he wants to show off his skills. But he cannot perform Laparoscopic Surgery so that he pieces together a bunch of outdated theories to cover. If the people in white have medical licenses, they would let the Laparoscopic Specialist perform. She dares to say the specialist thinks so as well.

Heung-Gon tells Myeong-Seop that he doesn’t think so. Su-Jeong learns that Sun-Ae doesn’t like frivolous word. So she says in Myeong-Seop’s old age, he becomes very greedy. She’s taken away.

Outside the auditorium, Sun-Ae blames Hui-Suk for sending the mad doctor to the hospital. Hui-Suk laughs. She tells Sun-Ae that Su-Jeong’s medical skills are very good. It will be helpful to the hospital. In light of what happened this time, Hui-Suk can charge a little less for the staffing fees. She promises Sun-Ae that she will tell Su-Jeong to tone it down a bit.

Hui-Suk is playing the game with Mi-Kyung. Mi-Kyung figures Su-Jeong got into trouble. But Hui-Suk thinks Su-Jeong just said something she should have said. She asks Woong-Gu to give a treatment on her shoulder. He wants her to pay him first. She tells him that she will cook for him.

In the meeting room at the hospital, Byeong-Gyu tells Myeong-Seop that he realized Gallbladder Cancer was very dangerous when he saw him on the TV. Seong-Gyu tells Byeong-Gyu that Myeong-Seop is the God of Gallbladder Cancer. Byeong-Gyu says he has provided Surgical Gloves for the hospital for 20 years. He did it to other hospitals as well. But he takes great pride in this place. He signs the agreement.

His wife takes out a present. She asks Myeong-Seop to accept it. He says he will be in big trouble if he accepts it. He accepts it in the end.

Myeong-Seop is in his office. He opens the present. It’s Malt Syrup in a pot. He asks Tae-Gyeong to throw it away with the trash.

Seong-Gyu and Tae-Gyeong leave Myeong-Seop’s office. Tae-Gyeong knows the malt syrup. Because his grandma made it for him ever. Seong-Gyu suggests that Tae-Gyeong should keep it. Tae-Gyeong thinks Myeong-Seop should have taken a bit because it took Byeong-Gyu’s wife quite a bit of effort.

In Yun-Sik’s office, Heung-Gon persuades Yun-Sik to fire Su-Jeong. She was rude. But Yun-Sik asks Heung-Gon to take a look at the doctor’s resume. Heung-Gon checks Su-Jeong’s resume. He learns that her specialty is surgery. He thinks she’s a liar. Seong-Gyu asks Yun-Sik to look into Su-Jeong. He thinks Su-Jeong shouldn’t have come to their hospital with her resume.

Su-Jeong gets in the office. Yun-Sik asks her to aid Seong-Gyu and Tae-Gyeong. She leaves the office with the two doctors. Yun-Sik decides to use Su-Jeong for one week. Anyway, they don’t have to pay. He asks Heung-Gon not to let the woman leave the desk and approach Myeong-Seop.

In the doctors’ office, Su-Jeong is checking Byeong-Gyu’s medical records. Tae-Gyeong mentions the hernia. He tells her that her diagnosis was right. The pool player underwent surgery immediately. He asks her about what she drew. She says it was a X. It means he’s not good.

Seong-Gyu notices that Su-Jeong is looking at Byeong-Gyu’s medical records. He didn’t ask her to do that. She says the patient runs a rubber factory. She asks him if he’s the patient, will he let Myeong-Seop perform the surgery for him. He’s a doctor. He knows he doesn’t need it. He says the case has been decided in the meeting. He agrees to let Myeong-Seop do it. So she asks him about his parents. If it’s his mother.

Tae-Gyeong tells Su-Jeong that it’s an extreme hypothesis. She has the patient has children as well. It’s just that he’s not a doctor. Seong-Gyu says he will wish Myeong-Seop replaces him to perform a surgery for his mother. If he’s the patient’s child, for his future, the patient will definitely let Myeong-Seop perform the surgery.

Heung-Gon shows up. Su-Jeong says this is why she hates the group of people. They study just to get rich and climb up. They don’t have medical ethics and convictions. They don’t think for themselves. They look smart, but they’re stupid. Kowtowing to superiors, bossing patients around. Currying favor with higher-ups, bullying nurses. They actually leave the surgery to an old man. He ignores his body condition and his surgery skills. It’s incredibly lucky that his hand doesn’t shake.

They know the patient’s life hangs by a thread, but they think about how to shift the blame. They expect the patients who are older than them, saying thanks. They’re nothing more than doctors in name only.

Heung-Gon is furious to ask Su-Jeong to get out of the office. She takes the bag on the desk. He mistakes that she wants to beat him. But she leaves the office with her bag. He thinks she did a right thing. But he sees the clock on the wall. It’s time to get off work. He asks Tae-Gyeong to go to catch the woman back.

Tae-Gyeong goes to look for Su-Jeong. But he gets in Byeong-Gyu’s ward. Byeong-Gyu’s wife thinks they did a right thing to let Myeong-Seop perform the surgery. The doctors saw them one by one. Tae-Gyeong is told that the doctor just came. Byeong-Gyu’s wife gives him the mango. She reveals their daughter bought it from the department store. She wanted to cheer up her sick father. Byeong-Gyu says the doctor liked the mango very much. His wife just gave the doctor yogurt.

She didn’t wear white robe. But she claimed that she was a doctor. She suggested that Byeong-Gyu should have delayed the surgery. Byeong-Gyu refused to delay it because he had a business in the factory. So she persuaded him to change a lead surgeon. But he insisted on letting Myeong-Seop do it. Tae-Gyeong tells Byeong-Gyu that tomorrow’s surgery is sure to go smoothly.

In the evening, Tae-Gyeong chases Su-Jeong out of the hospital. He sees the yogurt bottles she left. He drinks up his yogurt. He puts his yogurt bottle with her yogurt bottles.

At Hui-Suk’s house, Su-Jeong has hot pot with Hui-Suk and Mi-Kyung. Hui-Suk thinks it’s a good chance to earn money. She asks Su-Jeong to complete her bath quickly. Because gas bills have gone up. Su-Jeong points out that she paid the bills. She asks Hui-Suk does she know Myeong-Seop? Hui-Suk refuses the share the information for free. She wants to deduct it from Su-Jeong’s pay. Woong-Gu thinks Hui-Suk is so heartless. He gives some noodles to Su-Jeong.

The next day, Hui-Suk and Su-Jeong visit Myeong-Seop. Hui-Suk gives the Melon Gift Box to the dean. She tells him that he should keep the box well. She explains it to him that Su-Jeong lived abroad for a long time. She doesn’t know the rules of medical circle in Korea. She doesn’t know his remarkable achievements as well. She asks him to forgive Su-Jeong.

Su-Jeong has many shortcomings. Hui-Suk asks Myeong-Seop to let Su-Jeong do some odd jobs and stay in the hospital. Su-Jeong tells the dean that she wants to observe his surgery. She wants to see him showing his surgical method. He tells her that she can observe.

In the hallway, Yun-Sik brings up that Myeong-Seop hasn’t picked up a scalpel for a long time. Everyone will stare at Myeong-Seop. Heung-Gon comforts Yun-Sik that he will help the dean. The dean won’t know it.

Tae-Gyeong asks Seong-Gyu about Su-Jeong. Seong-Gyu blames Tae-Gyeong for mentioning the woman. It’s really bad luck.

Hui-Suk takes Su-Jeong into the observation room. She sees Seung-Gwon. Sun-Ae reveals the guy was expected to be the next dean at the main hospital. But someone took the position. Seung-Gwon didn’t smile, and he was a model doctor who was dedicated to his work. Other doctors couldn’t stand it.

Myeong-Seop passes out when he performs the surgery for the patient. But he passes out suddenly. Myeong-Seop is taken away. Most of the doctors go to take care of him.

In the Operating Room, Tae-Gyeong wants to save the patient. But the nurse reminds him that he’s just an intern. He sees Seung-Gwon. He realizes that Seung-Gwon can do the job. He tries to leave the operation room. But he sees Su-Jeong who’s wearing a surgical gown. He’s shocked, and he falls down. She takes over the operation room. She performs a perfect surgery in his help.

Seung-Gwon watches what Su-Jeong does. He’s interested in her. Hui-Suk catches the chance to hand over her business card to him. She introduces Su-Jeong as the star doctor at her company.

Sun-Ae returns to the observation room. She takes the cell phone. She tells Seung-Gwon that the dean survived after the Neurosurgery Team and Heung-Gon handled the situation appropriately. She wonders how the mad doctor knew it. Su-Jeong gave the dean a shot. She saved him.

Su-Jeong is taken into Yun-Sik’s office. Yun-Sik mentions she performed the surgery without his permission. Won-Jin takes Su-Jeong’s side. She says the patient went into shock for unknown reasons. Yun-Sik thinks Su-Jeong knows the reasons. Su-Jeong finishes her noodles. She points at the doctors in the office. She asks them to find it out on their own. Yun-Sik asks her was the shot adrenaline? She doesn’t give him the answer. Because she gets off work. She leaves the office.

Heung-Gon figures the dean had a stroke. Yun-Sik reveals Su-Jeong wanted to have an MRI done for the dean. She expected that he would pass out.

Tae-Gyeong goes to catch Su-Jeong. He sees her outside Byeong-Gyu’s ward. He decides not to catch her. He lets her go home.

The next day in the dean’s ward. Su-Jeong admits it to the dean that she performed the surgery. He thanks her, but he still thinks his method worked. She disagrees. He fires her. She returns to her office. She tells Seong-Gyu that she was fired.

In the cafeteria, Tae-Gyeong is told that Su-Jeong was fired. He thinks it’s unfair. Because Su-Jeong just saved a life. Heung-Gon thinks what Su-Jeong did is nothing. An experienced doctor could do the job like her. Tae-Gyeong brings up that Su-Jeong finished the surgery quickly. Seong-Gyu claims that he can achieve that kind of speed.

Won-Jin shows up. She guesses Seong-Gyu didn’t watch the surgery footage well. He didn’t discover that they changed the gloves. The nurse says she was called there because of it. Su-Jeong asked her to take latex-free gloves. Heung-Gon wonders how Su-Jeong knew the patient is allergic to latex. The Preoperative Assessment Form didn’t mention it. Seong-Gyu remembers the Rubber Factory.

Heung-Gon wonders how Su-Jeong knew the dean would have a stroke. He figures she drugged the dean. Won-Jin complains that the doctor who talks nonsense can keep his job, the doctor who saved someone’s life was fired. The hospital is like a circus.

In the dean’s ward, Seung-Gwon tells the dean that he feels relieved after he was fine. He saw it all, and he worried about it very much. It seems that nobody knows he was in anaphylactic shock. He went to his office, and he wanted to say hello to him. He saw the Secretary throwing away the melon. And he kept scratching the back of your neck. He must have known it was the delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction that was caused by latex. He asks him why did he do it? Due to inhalation of powder, it may cause anaphylactic shock. So law disallows to use powder gloves. But he did it for the sake of convenience, he ignored the rule. The patient almost lost his life.

Seung-Gwon knows the dean didn’t know he and the patient were all allergic to latex. He didn’t know it because he left Operating Room for a long time. Although the camera didn’t record it, Seung-Gwon has the gloves. He heard that the dean received the gift box from Hui-Suk. After all, Su-Jeong’s salary is paid by the hospital. He doesn’t have to spend a single penny, and he can make money from it.

The patient leaves the hospital. Seung-Gwon becomes new dean. He meets Hui-Suk and Su-Jeong in his office. Hui-Suk thanks Seung-Gwon for hiring Su-Jeong. Sun-Ae hands over the new contract to Hui-Suk. But Hui-Suk tears up the contract. She takes out the contract she prepared. Yun-Sik finds out that Su-Jeong’s salary is higher than his salary, according to the contract. He cannot accept it. He reminds Seung-Gwon that they will take all the duties if Su-Jeong makes a mistake in surgery. Su-Jeong claims that she won’t fail in surgery. Seung-Gwon asks her to start work today. He wants to shake hands with her. But she rejects it.

Hui-Suk and Su-Jeong leave Seung-Gwon’s office. Yun-Sik tells Seung-Gwon that Su-Jeong cannot help him achieve his aspirations. But Seung-Gwon says Su-Jeong’s resume is beautiful. He has never seen a person whose fingers are so fast.

Tae-Gyeong stops Su-Jeong in the hallway. He hands over the white coat to her. She wears the white coat. Heung-Gon and Seong-Gyu show up. They call Su-Jeong. She ignores the two, and she walks away. In Seung-Gwon’s office, Seung-Gwon says he can fire Su-Jeong at any time. He can count other problems of the hospital. He wants to see how she will perform. He crumples up her resume. Heung-Gon asks Su-Jeong why does she become a doctor since she hates it? She smiles.
