Ji-Ui is a doctor in Doctor on The Edge episode 1. He serves in the military. He shows his weakness while training. It promotes the officer to think that Ji-Ui cannot protect the nation. But Ji-Ui has a chance to prove himself soon. A soldier falls down a slope. His face is hurt. He’s sent to the health office. Ji-Ui volunteers to give the soldier a treatment. The doctor agrees. But the soldier doesn’t want to get a scar.
The Doctor Who Is Assigned to The Island
Ji-Ui stitches up the soldier’s wound. The soldier regrets for underestimating Ji-Ui. He thinks he’s a super hero. Ji-Ui walks out of the barrack. He wishes he won’t be sent to an island. His friend suggests that he shouldn’t fall in love if he’s sent to an island. They’re punished because they didn’t wear hats.
Ji-Ui believes that he won’t be unlucky to be sent the island. But he is. At the pier, Ji-Ui struggles with the decision if he should board the ship. He takes out a bottle of medicine. He tries to take the medicine. His senior calls him. He tells him that the medicine can cause memory loss and dizziness. He persuades him not to take it. He brings up the girl Hwa-Yeong. He persuades him to get together with Hwa-Yeong after her boyfriend left her so long.
Ha-Ri shows up when she talks with someone over the phone. She says that scars are cured by money. She asks him to take out his wallet if he worries about her wound. She takes out a bottle of wine from her bag. She drinks it. She turns around. She sees Ji-Ui. Ji-Ui takes two pills before he boards the ship. He tells himself that nothing will happen.
On the ship, Ji-Ui is woken up by the old lady who wants to borrow some money from him. He sees Ha-Ri jumping into the sea. He jumps into the sea as well to save her.
In a hospital room, Ju-Cheon is feeding fish. Jeong-Seon appears from behind him. She mentions there are fish everywhere out there. She doesn’t understand why he looks at the fish in the fish tank. He says that the fishes are at different levels. She points out that the fishes all live in water. He asks her if she saw his leave request form. She scolds him. She tells him that he should have submitted it there days ago. She will take care of it. But this will be a one-time exception.
Jeong-Seon talks with Shin-Hye about the new doctor at the nurse station. The doctor didn’t arrive. But the ship arrived early. Shin-Hye guesses the guy took the pedal boat. He wouldn’t get lost. Because doctors are very smart. She thinks he took the long way around. She calls Ji-Ui.
Ji-Ui wakes up in the ward. He’s startled after he saw Shin-Hye. She gets into the ward with Jeong-Seon. She doesn’t expect that Ji-Ui has been there. She looked for him. He asks her if the girl is still alive. She thinks he’s talking nonsense. She guesses he had a strange dream. She heard that someone passed out on the ship. She mistook it was a tourist. She was surprised that it was their doctor. She asks him to go to visit the hospital. Because he needs to stay in the hospital for one year.
Ji-Ui walks out of the ward. Shin-Hye introduces the doctor Ju-Cheon to him. Ju-Cheon recognizes Ji-Ui immediately. Because Ji-Ui was carried into the hospital. He welcomes him. He asks him for his number. He knows he will be hard to adjust to life on the island. He will invite him to join all the groups. But Jeong-Seon says that it’s just like everywhere else here.
Shin-Hye tells Ji-Ui that she arranged the largest examination room for him. After all, he’s a specialist. In the examination room, Ji-Ui checks the mercury sphygmomanometer. Shin-Hye worries that it’s outdated. She complains it to him that they request a replacement each year. But those guys didn’t do that. She knows the hospital is very rudimentary. But he will resolve the problems. The patients who come to their hospital don’t have serious illnesses. But he thinks they should replace it with a new blood pressure monitor.
Shin-Hye and Ji-Ui walk out of the examination room. She wants to pour him a drink. But he wants to take a shower. She gives the key to him. She shows him the way. Ji-Ui walks into his room. He sees a centipede. The centipede falls on his face. He’s scared to run out of his room. He complains it to Shin-Hye that the centipede fell on his face. But she thinks it’s not a big deal. She guesses the centipede was even more shocked than he was. The centipedes on the island are gentle. She asks him to treat them like roommates. She gives him a bottle of insecticide.
Ji-Ui sprays insecticide in his room. He opens his suitcase. He discovers that the suitcase doesn’t belong to him. He remembers the drinking girl Ha-Ri. He realizes that it belongs to the girl. He carries the suitcase out of his room. He tells Shin-Hye that his luggage was switched. He doesn’t know what to do. She suggests that he should go to the Community Center.
Ji-Ui is on the way to the Community Center. Chi-Yeon drives past Ji-Ui in his luxury car. The dust kicked up by the car almost kills Ji-Ui. Chi-Yeon enters the hospital. He’s a doctor as well. He went to see an old lady. He thinks it’s unfair that patients who are mobile can request a house call. Shin-Hye admits that it’s unfair. But nothing is absolutely fair. So he refuses to provide house call service. Because he doesn’t have the duty.
At the Community Center, Chun-Sik learns that Ji-Ui’s luggage was mixed up with someone else’s on the ship. The person was a girl. She was with short hair. Ji-Ui asks Chun-Sik if there was a passenger falling into the water on the ship. Chun-Sik says that there haven’t been any accidents in twenty years. He realizes that Ji-Ui’s luggage might have been mixed up with Mi-Ja’s granddaughter’s. The person who carried Ji-Ui back was Mi-Ja’s granddaughter.
Ji-Ui learns that the person who carried him was a girl. He’s on the way to Mi-Ja’s house. But Ha-Ri takes him to run when she’s chased by a dog. The two flee to the tree. Ji-Ui hides in the tree. Ha-Ri is slow. The dog licks her on the ground. The madam Geum-Ja shows up. She stops her dog. Ha-Ri recognizes Geum-Ja. They have a hug. Ha-Ri is happy to stroke the dog. Ji-Ui thinks the dog is kind.
At Mi-Ja’s house, Ha-Ri returns the luggage to Ji-Ui. She guesses she was drowsy to take the wrong luggage. He asks her to check the luggage as well. But she believes that the luggage belongs to her. She opens the suitcase after he insisted. He sees the medicine. He remembers it’s cancer drugs. He sees a centipede. He’s startled to avoid the centipede. She takes care of the centipede.
She returns the medicine to him. She persuades him not to take the medicine. She thinks it’s not suitable for him. He was dangerous on the ship. He laughs. He asks her if she wanted to kill herself on the ship. He complains it to her that he ends up like that to save her.
It flashes up. Ha-Ri video chats with Mi-Ja on the ship. She tells her that the ocean is beautiful. Her knit jacket flies away. She thinks she should buy a new one. Ji-Ui rushes to Ha-Ri. She’s startled to step aside. He tries to jump into the sea. She has to grab something to hit his head. He passes out.
At present, Ha-Ri asks Ji-Ui if he doesn’t remember anything. He says yes. He’s flustered to leave her house. Ha-Ri and Mi-Ja pay their respects to Ha-Ri’s parents. Ha-Ri tells her grandma that Ji-Ui is a weirdo. Mi-Ja asks Ha-Ri what she wants to achieve on the island. Ha-Ri makes an excuse that her parents are hungry. Mi-Ja is surprised that the wine bottle was opened. Ha-Ri pretends she knows nothing. But Mi-Ja can tell that the girl drank it. Ha-Ri confesses that she did it when she was thirsty. She thinks she’s like Mi-Ja.
Ji-Ui walks on the road. He thinks Ha-Ri made up stories. He arrives at the hospital. He sees the car that made him eat dust. He carries his luggage to the second floor. He opens the door of the bathroom. Chi-Yeon is taking a shower in the bathroom. Ji-Ui explains it to Chi-Yeon that he thought nobody was in the bathroom. He admits that he’s the new doctor. Chi-Yeon shakes hands with Ji-Ui. He mentions Ji-Ui was carried to the hospital. Ji-Ui claims that he doesn’t remember it.
Ji-Ui unpacks his stuff in his room. He takes a look at Hwa-Yeong’s photo. Ju-Cheon knocks at the door. Ji-Ui quickly puts the photo into his drawer. Ju-Cheon reminds Ji-Ui that he should buy them a meal. Because he just came. Chi-Yeon is waiting for Ji-Ui. So Ji-Ui should go out quickly.
Ji-Ui, Chi-Yeon and Ju-Cheon go to a restaurant. The restaurant owner Geum-Ja recognizes Ji-Ui. Ju-Cheon is told that Ji-Ui’s specialty is plastic surgery. He guesses he got good grades in the school. He suggests that Chi-Yeon should open a plastic surgery clinic. But Chi-Yeon says that he doesn’t like plastic surgeon. He thinks those guys are profit-driven. Geum-Ja brings the dish. But Ji-Ui doesn’t like the dish. Ju-Cheon suggests that Ji-Ui should eat it. Because it’s the only restaurant on the island. He will starve to death if he doesn’t show the expression that he likes it. Geum-Ja gets a call from Village Chief. He asks a doctor to return to the hospital. Ji-Ui volunteers to do the job. He claims that he’s a workaholic.
Ji-Ui arrives at the hospital. Chun-Sik is waiting for Ji-Ui. He tells him that he has indigestion. Because he feels tightness in his chest. He has to leave because he has the client who’s going to come. He asks him for the medicine.
Ji-Ui takes Chun-Sik’s blood pressure. He finds out that his blood pressure is very high. He guesses it’s myocardial infarction. He tells him that he will die if he doesn’t go to hospital. Chun-Sik pretends to agree. But he drives his car to flee.
Shin-Hye arrives at the hospital. Ji-Ui reports to her that the patient fled when he called her. Jeong-Seon complains that she called a helicopter. But there’s no patient. She worries that they will be punished. But Ji-Ui thinks they will use the helicopter. Because the patient will has a heart attack. They need to find the patient.
The doctors find Chun-Sik on the boat. He drives them away. He passes out on his boat when they try to leave. Ji-Ui performs CPR on Chun-Sik. The helicopter arrives. Ji-Ui and the doctors carry Chun-Sik into the helicopter. The guy asks Ji-Ui to join them in the helicopter after knowing he’s a doctor.
At the hospital, Ji-Ui and the doctors take Chun-Sik into the operating room. But Ji-Ui doesn’t know how to return home. He calls Shin-Hye. She asks him to stay one night in a hotel. The last ferry has already left. She asks him to take a ferry tomorrow.
In a hotel room, Ji-Ui sleeps through the night. Shin-Hye calls him. She thinks he should have come early. They’re busy in the hospital. She threatens him that he abandons his post if he doesn’t come. He will be not allowed to be assigned to another region. She asks him if he wants to stay on the island for three years. At the pier, Ji-Ui doesn’t want to board the ferry. He recalls terrible memories. Someone puts a pair of headphones on his head. He turns around. He sees Ha-Ri who’s smiling at him.
